I flew for 40 years both in USAF and as an airline pilot for one of the largest global passenger carriers. The two singular authors who captured the essence and romance of the pilot's love of flying are Saint-Exupery and Ernest Gann. I've read and re-read their works since the beginning, always finding new insights as my own career progressed.

If you are considering, experiencing, or remembering the aviator's life, Gann and Saint-Exupery are essential.

Night Flight Antoine de SaintExupery 9781417996506 Books Reviews

A classic collection of St. Expery "flight" books. Read first in the early 1970s and re-read and re-read. Swept away by the storytelling...and the genius of St. Expery.
Ima longtime fan of this authorandlook forward to sharing these unique stories with a grandchild when I'm done with them.
A very entertaining read. Early airmail pilots were a rare breed, flying open cockpit biplanes over mountainous terrain (single engine) at night. .. St.Ex. puts his reader in the airplane with him in ways few others are able to manage. Preserving in detail the memory and legacy of these early aviators. ...an even better read in French...
This is one of those books that makes you think "Why didn't they make us read THIS in high school?"

There is so much more to this than flying...flying is merely the backdrop, albeit a perfect setting to invoke these kinds of inward thoughts and observations on humanity and human existence. You do NOT have to be a pilot to enjoy this book, in fact the setting could be anything that places man on the edges of technology and life itself.

They say that flying is hours and hours of seemingly endless boredom, highlighted by seconds of shear terror. And the flying that Saint-Ex did in the early days of open cockpit flying was certainly more terror than today. Saint-Ex has a way with words that I have never encountered before; he weaves analogies where one thought they could not exist...putting into beautiful words those thoughts that all of us have had but could never begin to explain.

Why did I encounter this book now at the age of 33? I was told I should read "The Little Prince" but found it to be somewhat elementary, being the children's book that it is. So I picked up this trilogy. And I find myself asking again, seriously, why didn't anyone tell me about this book when I was 20?
Saint-Exupéry served as a mail carrier in Argentina, and writes most beautifully about flight, and the human condition. This short book, easily read in a night, is packed with potent, exquisite verse. While I usually highlight facts or lovely phrases in any book I read, I find myself highlighting entire paragraphs in this book, because they are so lyrical. Saint-Exupéry can make the most common of scenes into an amazing piece of narrative poetry. You can read and reread the same sentence and the words just flow, melt, illuminate. It's amazing! The basic story occurs in one night, maybe around 1930, when three mail carriers are flying from Patagonia, Chile, and Paraguay to Argentina. Riviere is the main character, and director, driven with such a deep sense of duty and precision, that all emotions and compassion come in second place. One pilot, Fabien, crossing the Andes, flies into a storm, and Riviere suddenly realizes he might lose him. He spends the night tracking him, and wrestling with feelings and thoughts that keep roiling up, but are suppressed in order to do his job and serve as a boss and role model to the other men involved. He is seen as rather heartless to his men, but Saint-Exupery allows us to see that this is not true. He sacrifices his emotions for his job, like the pilots sacrifice their lives sometimes. Saint-Exupery is a gifted writer, who remains one of my favorites. His writing is like no other; his descriptions always leave me a little breathless and stunned with pleasure.
This is an almost- poetic vignette of the heroic men who flew the mail routes in South America during the early years of aviation. For me, it got off to a slow start but ends in gripping tension. It's short enough to be easily read a second time, and that's what I plan to do, hoping to get a fuller appreciation of the work.
I found another treasure in this BUY IT! The author is Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who wrote the famous "The Little Prince" and in "Night Flight" he does it again - art via his famous e"conomy-imparts-generously" mechanic. A crime that he died so young - he was so famous in his day, too! When on land, He padded about with celebs and perfumer, Guerlain made a cologne "Vol de Nuit" - the name of the book in friench...precisely to honor the book and it author.
Content gives us in a few magic strokes, the picture of the miracle of flight in evolution - we take it all for granted today, but here is how they did it and how they won though days of hatred for all flight made by man. NO spoilers here - read it - you will be glad! Read it at night, curled up in comfort - re-read it on a night when the mood TELLS you - re-read "Night Flight"
