Always enjoy Gonzalez and Survivor did not disappoint. Great, compelling characters... many of the love to hate variety. The story did suffer from trying to stretch it into more of a novel. Trimmed down some this would be a solid 4 🌟 outing.
This novel doesn't hold back, which is important to me. I look for extremes in movies and literature. I write horror myself and always expect great things from authors who choose to push the limits. Gonzalez DOES push the limits here...in fact, he crosses boundaries and quickly shows the reader that there really are no limits. The only reason I didn't give this title a full 5 stars is because sometimes it seemed like the writing was for shock value rather than the pure horrific nature of the acts.
The depravity, moral corruption, and despicable perversion displayed in JF Gonzalez's characters crank up the volume of any reader's scream. And scream you will for fear that, by exposure, even your most hidden residual innocence may be taken forever. Just the possibility that something like "Animal" probably lurks in our fallen world is living evidence of the most foul, putrefaction of gray matter. Yet the shock alone pulls the reader along at warp speed that's comparable to the thriller's thriller; so intense you'll keen for relief. Through it all, the severity of the protagonist's emotional and physical pain along with the anguish of being a survivor, can only leave one certain that life must be lived - and it's worth living. This book is NOT for the faint of heart - I've been heavily reading the extreme horror genre and churning through books that keep my interest at a "meh" level until I started reading Survivor. This story is excellently told and enthralling, but it is dark, demented, and will leave a lasting effect on you that is not for everyone. You've been warned - I would not make this my first book in the extreme horror genre - you need something to get you used to the idea before this book because it is depraved, tragic, disgusting, but also awesome front to back. Would recommend highly for vets of this genre looking for the pinnacle.
This was a horrifying book and I mean that as a compliment. I devoured this book in two days because the writing style isn't complicated but the action is high and the violence is brutal. The author covers all his bases. He leaves no alibi unturned. The ending is great and the Prologue is beautiful. I am sad that I discovered the author after he passed (as I heard on FB he died in 2014) but I am happy I found a new author that I will enjoy reading in my future. I ordered Gonzalez's books The Corporation and Screaming To Get Out to read next. If they are written as well as this book, I know I will enjoy it!
I would give it a 4.5 if I could just as a disclaimer. Man this book was one of the more shocking pieces of entertainment I've ever consumed. Its subject matter was so terrible that it seems like complete fantasy but in reality some of these things happen in real life. Gonzalez definitely wasn't afraid to write what he felt like writing. The book stays pretty engaging all the way through with a little drag here and there, towards the end the tone shifts to a lighter side. The books ending was extremely sad but in a way that made me appreciate the experience I had reading it. I would say for the low price absolutely buy it if you can handle some hardcore horror.
This is by far the most disturbing, graphic, risk-taking novel I've ever read in
my life. I've read everything by Stephen King, nearly everything by Dean Koontz,
and then books by brutal horror authors like Bentley Little, James Herbert, Richard
Laymon, Jack Ketchum, and Thomas Tessier, and nothing I've read by them can come
close to this masterpiece of sick twisted violence. The novel is about a couple who
is going on vacation. The husband is framed for a minor crime so that the wife will
be available for kidnapping. Once she is taken, she is told all about the underworld
of pornography. Soon, she will be a star in a snuff film in which she will be raped
and tortured to death by someone called Animal. The rest you can read for yourself.
This book is not for everyone. Within the first ten pages, there is a girl on girl
sex scene that concludes with one girl sucking out the other's eyeball. Later, there
is a baby involved something that I will never ever forget. It's bloody, it's fast-paced,
and it's terrifying because there is nothing supernatural about this. The closest
book I can relate it to is The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum, but I found this one
far more disturbing. Gonzalez fills it with research about snuff films and how they
are made and sold and how the government has such a hard time tracking them down.
For a while, this book has the feel of a cheap horror film like The Hills Have Eyes
or Hostile, but the characters are believable and the novel goes from pure violent
horror to more suspense and that is what brought my already overwhelming respect
for the book and it's author to even greater heights. Read this book if you are a
horror fan, but it's unlike anything I've ever read before and once again, not for
everyone.
